Fun fact: Once upon a time, nice meant … foolish
It’s true! In the Middle Ages, if someone said you were nice, they meant you were ignorant, or even silly.
The word nice came from the Latin nescius, meaning “not knowing.” Over time, it went through all kinds of meanings — including “shy,” “fussy,” and “precise” — before becoming the kind and pleasant compliment we use today.
Language never stops evolving!
Fun fact: the secret history of ‘companion’
The English word companion has a delicious history.
It comes from the Latin com panis, which means “with bread.”
So a companion is, in the oldest sense, someone you share bread with.
The Latin word panis also travelled far — through Portuguese, it reached Japan.
That’s why the Japanese word for bread, パン (pan), comes from the same root.
Next time you share bread with someone, remember: you’re continuing an ancient story of friendship, language, and food.
Fun fact: a unique pattern in ‘bookkeeper’
The word ‘bookkeeper‘ (and ‘bookkeeping‘) are the only unhyphenated English words with three consecutive double letters.
Look closely: oo, kk, ee: b-oo-kk-ee-per, bookkeeper
Oddly satisfying, right?
Fun fact: the strange case of ‘cleave’
The word‘cleave‘ means both to split apart and to stick together.
Same spelling, opposite meanings.
👉 “He cleaved the log in two.”
👉 “She cleaved to her beliefs.”
Context is everything.

本当です！中世のヨーロッパでは、誰かが「you are nice（あなたはナイス）」と言ったら、「無知」や「おバカさん」という意味だったのです。
「nice」は、ラテン語の nescius（知らない）に由来します。そこから「恥ずかしがり屋」「細かい」「几帳面」など、さまざまな意味を経て、ようやく今の「親切で感じのよい」という意味になりました。

Fun fact：「コンパニオン」(companion) の秘密の語源
英語の companion（仲間・友人）という言葉には、ちょっと美味しい歴史があります。
もともとはラテン語の com panis から来ていて、意味は「パンを共にする人」。
つまり、本来の「コンパニオン」とは「パンを分け合う仲間」のことだったのです。
そしてこの panis（パン）という言葉は、ポルトガルを通じて日本にも伝わりました。
だから日本語の「パン（pan）」も、同じ語源を持っているんです。
パンを分け合う時、あなたも友情と食べ物の長い物語の中にいるのかもしれませんね。
Fun fact: ‘bookkeeper’ の秘密
【英語のちょっと面白い事実】
“bookkeeper” と “bookkeeping” は、英語でハイフンなしで連続して3組の二重文字がある唯一の単語です。
よく見ると → oo, kk, ee。
なんだか気持ちいいですね。
Fun fact: ‘cleave’ の正反対の意味
【英語の小ネタ 💡】
cleave という単語、実は「引き裂く」と「しっかりくっつく」という正反対の意味があるんです。
👉 “He cleaved the log in two.”（丸太を真っ二つに割った）
👉 “She cleaved to her beliefs.”（彼女は信念に固執した）
文脈で意味が決まる、不思議な単語。
